About Scooby Register
Where the data comes from, and what it can and can't tell you.
Publicly sourced, honestly labelled
Scooby Register decodes Subaru VINs and JDM chassis numbers using publicly documented reference data — chassis-code guides, owners'-club model databases, and manufacturer press figures for limited editions. Nothing here is invented: where only an estimate or a generation-level figure exists, it's labelled as such.
VIN decoding
Standard 17-digit US-spec VIN positions (manufacturer, line, body, engine, model year, plant, transmission) sourced from long-published VIN reference charts.
JDM chassis & applied-model codes
Chassis-prefix generation identification, plus a detailed Impreza (GC8/GF8, MY93–MY00) and first-generation Legacy (BC/BF, 1989–1993) applied-model reference, cross-checked against dedicated owners'-club databases.
Production figures
Named limited editions and generation totals are shown only where a genuine published figure exists, each with its source and a confidence rating (high / medium / low).
Exact colour & variant breakdowns
Where available — for example, the GC8-era WRX Type RA/STI production-by-colour matrix — exact figures are shown rather than an aggregate estimate.
What this can't do
It can't give an exact "car number X of Y" answer for an arbitrary individual VIN — that requires a large real-world dataset of chassis numbers to count against, which isn't part of this build.
